Top positive review. Reviewed in the United States on July 15, I like it only because it's Jan and Dean, trying to accomplish the impossible. I know they had a lot of help, but they're the best example of independents going at the industry.
I appreciate Dean's loyalty and effort and overall it's an easy listen to me, but definitely can see those who look for Barbara Ann at the end of Beach Boys concert they aren't going find Baby Talk here. OH and be prepared for a lot of rainfall Top critical review.
Reviewed in the United States on July 25, I hate to do this, but I've got to be fair to all you people who are reading this for an honest review. This album is of such poor sound quality, I find myself avoiding it when I want to listen to it! Sundazed, in my book, is still the premier 60's reissue label, but on this one, they really dropped the ball.
Most songs sound "muffled" or "echoey", and not clear. The vocals are great, but the quality at which we hear them isn't. Melancholia abounds on this album, and it fits the mood perfectly when one thinks of the circumstances it was recorded under. Jan had just had his fateful accident, and the future of the two surf magnates wasn't bright. Nevertheless, when the architect of the duo, Jan Berry , was incapacitated in early by a terrible car accident that ultimately left him brain-damaged, Dean Torrence took up the business and musical reins of the band and made a nearly convincing one-shot stab at progressive pop with Save for a Rainy Day.
The album is conceptual, in the loosest sense of the word, in that each song is about or refers to rain and is held together like a song cycle by thunderstorm sound effects.
In addition, most of the tracks were also created by Joe Osborne and Larry Knetchel , as well as another of Torrence 's friends and neighbors, James Burton. As opposed to an opulent studio creation, however, most of Save for a Rainy Day was stitched together in Osborne 's garage.
On the other hand, the music occasionally dips into uncomfortably sappy sentiment and easy listening sounds. Nevertheless, the album really is a lovely Californian artifact and worthy blue afternoon listen.
