The Zombies - Time Of The Zombies (Vinyl, LP)

In their time and beyond, the Zombies are the rare Hall of Fame inductees who were viewed as a cult band for the majority of their time together. In a way, that makes this latest crop of reissues, which wrongly presents them as an album-centric band for their entire career, as strangely appropriate as it is inessential. Date released "Butcher's Tale Western Front " as a single in the US, feeling that the song's anti-war theme would resonate with record-buyers due to the Vietnam War. After the song became a hit, Date re-released Odessey and Oracle with severely cropped artwork.

This time the album charted, reaching number 95 in the US. This was made possible because the Zombies owned the multi track masters, which are in the possession of Chris White. Alternate mixes of "A Rose for Emily", featuring discarded overdubs of cello and Mellotron, appear on Zombie Heaven and the 30th anniversary release of the album.

Because the band split before the album was released, they never performed any of the songs onstage. However, due to the surprise success of "Time of the Season", several "fake" versions of the Zombies were created by unscrupulous promoters in to cash in on public demand to see and hear the band.

The original five-piece line-up reformed briefly in for the launch party of the Zombie Heaven boxset. In , Blunstone and Argent resurrected the Zombies as a recording and touring unit with ex-Argent bass guitarist Jim Rodford , his son Steve Rodford on drums and Keith Airey on guitar.

The Blunstone-Argent lineup toured for several years, performing a number of songs from the album. There was one final reunion of the original five members in at a benefit gig for Paul Atkinson, and though Atkinson was very ill, he insisted on performing with them.

Atkinson died later that year. In March , to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the album's release, the four surviving members performed Odessey and Oracle in its entirety for three shows at the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London. They were joined by Keith Airey, Darian Sahanaja and various friends. The Zombies were insistent on recreating the sound as authentically as possible, hence the extra singers, Sahanaja filling in keyboard and Mellotron parts via use of a Memotron , and Argent himself playing an original mellotron on a couple of numbers.

Argent also tracked down a Victorian pump organ dating from so they could recreate White's "Butcher's Tale", the original organ having long since been given away or sold by White. The Zombies. Retrieved 29 May Retrieved 4 May The album was mixed into the standard mono; however as another concession toward their limited budget, Argent and White who, due to their songwriting royalties, had earned more than the rest of the members personally paid for stereo mixes. The change in direction was evident on their first single released by CBS, " Care of Cell 44 ", a song about the anticipation felt while waiting for the singer's partner to be released from prison.

It is also notable for the title of the song not appearing anywhere in the lyrics. Unfortunately, like their previous Decca releases, it failed to reach the charts.

With the band experiencing a declining demand for live appearances, they split up after a final gig in mid-December It was only given a US release because musician Al Kooper , then signed to Columbia Records, convinced his label of the album's merits. One of its tracks, " Time of the Season ", written by Argent, was released as a single in and spent a long period as a 'sleeper'. Eventually, in , it grew to become a nationwide hit in the US, peaking in the Hot Billboard at No.

In , Argent and White began working on material for a possible new band when they were approached by CBS to do another Zombies album. Several new tracks were cut with a line-up of Argent, Hugh Grundy, Rodford bass and Rick Birkett guitar , and were combined with some old Decca out-takes and demos that were overdubbed and enhanced in sessions at Morgan Studios in London.

The album, scheduled for release in , was cancelled and only a couple of the songs, "Imagine the Swan" one of the newly recorded songs and "If It Don't Work Out" a demo of a song that Dusty Springfield recorded and released in , were put out as singles instead. Some of this material was released on various compilation albums during the s and s, and the album, titled R.

After the Zombies disbanded, Rod Argent formed the band called Argent in , with White as a non-performing songwriter. Blunstone started a solo career after a brief period outside the music business, including working in the burglary claims section of an insurance company. Both Argent and White provided him with new songs. He also did studio vocals for the Alan Parsons Project. The original line-up declined to regroup for concerts following the belated American success of "Time of the Season".

In turn, various concocted bands tried to capitalise on the success and falsely toured under the band's name. In a scheme organized by Delta Promotions, an agency that also created fake touring versions of The Animals and The Archies , two fake Zombie line-ups were touring simultaneously in , one hailing from Texas, the other from Michigan.
